Deep Linking

Deep linking allows users to tap a link – in a social media feed, another app, or anywhere on the web – and open your app directly. The URL can match your actual website domain.

One major perk: when a user taps the link and your app isn’t installed, they’re automatically taken to the App Store to install it.

Complex deep linking solutions exist through third-party providers like Branch.io. But in most cases, the simpler built-in options work just fine:

  • Universal Links – for iOS
  • App Links – for Android

About 90% of the time, these work perfectly without any third-party providers.

To make deep linking work, certain configuration files must be hosted on your website. You can either:

  • Use a subdomain like link.yourdomain.com
  • Host the files directly on your main marketing URL

Both approaches work fine.

Having an external website is essential for hosting these configuration files – another reason why your mobile app needs a website.

In the meantime, plenty of documentation exists online for creating these configuration files manually.
